Steam lists Starbreed (app 2694020) with full controller support, including DualShock and DualSense feature flags, plus Steam Cloud. The game is still a mouse-aim rail shooter at heart: demo reviewers often said a pad felt better than keyboard for barrel rolls, while ultrawide PC footage still shows mouse tracking. This page translates the Controls verbs onto sticks without pretending every bind is identical on every firmware.

itch.io Windows and Linux zips are the same 1.0.2 fantasy with manual updates. Steam Deck users should prefer the Steam build for Cloud, achievements, and Steam Input. Linux itch is excellent on a desktop; Deck is happier inside Proton / native Steam runtime.

Verbs, not glyphs

Open Options on first launch and screenshot your layout. If Steam Input and in-game binds double-fire, disable the conflicting Steam template, then remap once. DualSense adaptive triggers are optional flavor; do not require them for a gold medal.

Steam Deck practicalities

• Set a performance cap you can hold in particle-heavy bosses (Bosses, Finale2). Hitching feels like input loss.
• Use windowed or 1280×720-class modes if UI scale fights the Deck screen—development explicitly added those windows.
• Turn off heavy overlays.
• Test Q/E equivalents in an early Catiya stage before you trust a Nova rush.
• Cloud: launch online once after a long session so Affinity and chips sync (Troubleshooting).

Community threads asked about Deck support during demo year. 1.0’s store flags say full controller support shipped. That is not a promise of 90 Hz handheld bliss on every dock. If thermals throttle, drop effects before you blame Siren’s heal timing.

Aim and thrust on a stick

Right-stick aim wants lower sensitivity than a first-person shooter. Rails already move the camera; you are leading shots, not flicking 180s. Brake (the S verb) is how pad players land MITE Drones and yarn balls. Empty Thrust still punishes Rooster with HP drain—Assertion investment is not a keyboard-only tip.

Practice routine (ten minutes, any input):

1. Boost-brake weave, no firing.
2. Roll-only defense.
3. One party active on cooldown.
4. Finish or fail the stage; then shop (Credits Shop).

Keyboard versus pad

Pick one primary device per save week. Mixing mouse aim with pad rolls in the same boss is how people clip Catiya lasers. Ultrawide mouse play is documented in the Getting Started video; pad play is what the demo reviewer recommended for comfort. Both are valid in 1.0.

Accessibility

Remap anything that fights your hands. Pause is legal information. Starbreed is single-player; there is no teammate to steal your Q. If a patch blanks ally icons while paused, that class of bug appeared in older builds—recheck notes after a 1.0.x bump.

Dock versus handheld

On a docked Deck or TV, a mouse on a tray is legal. The wiki default is still one device per session. Switching mid-Finale2 is how deadzones eat a roll. Handheld wants an FPS cap; docked can spend watts on particles so Nova telegraphs stay readable. Linux itch on a desktop should use the stick verbs and ignore Deck thermal notes.
