Starbreed Troubleshooting Guide

Scope

Starbreed (RegulusNSFW / Mango Party) released July 30, 2026 on Steam app 2694020 and itch.io (~$10.99) as a single-player 18+ rail shooter × dating sim. Most problems are configuration, storefront, or understanding issues—not mysterious engine bugs. This guide collects fixes players reported across demo eras through v1.0.2 itch packages without graphic content or ending spoilers.

When a section says “verify on Patch Notes,” do that first—hotfixes can outpace wiki summaries.

Save system history and JSON saves

Early public builds experimented with binary saves that frustrated players after crashes. Development moved toward JSON-style saves for stability and transparency. If you migrated from demo curiosity to full 1.0, do not expect imported demo files—start a fresh campaign save on the storefront you bought.

Best practices:

  • Back up save folders before major patches or experimental OS updates
  • Quit to hub after important unlocks so autosave flushes
  • Avoid force-killing during stage loads
  • If progress rolls back, note build label (Steam vs itch v1.0.2) and OS

Steam Cloud may sync saves when enabled, but Cloud is not a time machine. If two PCs fight over state, disable Cloud temporarily, pick the authoritative local file, then re-enable. Achievement unlocks follow Steam rules separately—see Achievements.

Resolve and Assertion allocation confusion

The most common “bug report” is a progression misunderstanding:

  1. You earn Resolve and Assertion points by completing missions/stages (mission payouts feed the pool).
  2. You allocate those points in the hub Aether tab toward Resolve (max HP / feminine appeal) or Assertion (boost recharge / masculine appeal).
  3. Female Aether unlocks around 50 Resolve; form swap remains available afterward.

Community threads on itch confirmed the lobby Aether tab flow after players searched inventories for invisible stat items. If numbers look frozen, finish a stage clear and reopen the Aether tab before filing a bug.

Full stat essay: Resolve and Assertion. Female Aether context: Aether Guide. This is not Affinity—ally bonds live on separate UI (Affinity).

Steam regional bans and itch fallback

Adult titles sometimes do not appear on Steam in specific regions (Germany is a commonly cited example in community posts). Symptoms: store page unavailable, purchase button missing, or library refusal despite VPN myths.

Practical path: buy on itch.io where Mango Party also distributes Starbreed v1.0.2 builds for PC/Linux. You still get the full single-player campaign; you lose Steam achievements unless you also own Steam. Read Launch Notes for storefront parity context and Review for buyer expectations.

Never share account credentials with grey-market key sites; official stores only.

Gamepad hiccups

Controllers are supported alongside keyboard/mouse, but rail shooters are aim-sensitive. Typical issues:

  • Cursor drift or sluggish aim — test dead zones in OS controller settings; recalibrate before blaming in-game sensitivity
  • Confirm/cancel swaps — some players remap at OS level; verify Steam Input if enabled
  • Missed barrel rolls — digital pad diagonals may not register like keyboard A/D; prefer shoulder buttons if the game maps rolls elsewhere
  • Party actives not firing — check binding screen after patches (Controls)

If only gamepad fails, note it in bug reports with build number. Keyboard sanity check isolates hardware vs software.

Windowed display modes

QA-era notes added windowed 1920×1080 and 1280×720 options for ultrawide or laptop panels that choke on exclusive fullscreen. If the screen goes black or mis-scaled:

  • Toggle windowed in options, apply, alt-tab once
  • Set desktop scaling to 100% temporarily on Windows
  • Update GPU drivers; Starbreed is not exotic, but hybrid GPUs still trip

More hardware context: System Requirements.

Performance and stutter during hub scenes

Hub UI and H-scene rooms can spike differently than stages. Lower background capture apps, cap FPS externally if needed, and close overlay recorders that inject hooks. Stage performance issues while chip hunting may be loadout complexity—test a minimal weapon from Credits Shop before declaring hardware insufficient.

Affinity, Trials, and “stuck progress”

If Affinity appears capped below a threshold, clear the next planet unlock rather than repeating the same conversation endlessly. Caps historically rose with galaxy progress in progress reports (Affinity). Trials require 100 Affinity first (Impregnation Trials).

Medals and achievements not popping

Verify live medal thresholds—demo numbers on Medals and Scoring may differ post-1.0. Steam achievements need the Steam client online; itch builds do not grant Steam icons.

When to escalate a real bug

Include:

  • Storefront (Steam/itch) and build string (v1.0.2 etc.)
  • OS (Windows vs Linux package)
  • Input device
  • Repro steps (hub vs stage vs Trial UI)
  • Save backup willingness

Vague “game broken” posts get ignored; structured reports get patched.

Prevention checklist

After each play session: note build version, backup saves weekly during heavy Affinity routing, and spend thirty seconds in the Aether tab confirming allocations match your plan. Most “lost evenings” are save hygiene or stat confusion, not unbeatable bosses—those belong on Boss Guides instead.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common Starbreed questions.

Where are Starbreed saves stored?

JSON-style saves replaced older binary formats. Back up your save folder before patches; paths vary by OS and storefront.

Why cannot I spend Resolve or Assertion?

Earn points from mission clears first, then allocate in the hub Aether tab—not from ally Affinity screens.

Steam is blocked in my country—what now?

Purchase the full campaign on itch.io. Achievements remain Steam-specific if you need those icons.

Which resolutions are supported windowed?

1920×1080 and 1280×720 windowed modes shipped during QA eras; use options if fullscreen misbehaves.

Does Steam Cloud always work?

Only when enabled and online. Conflicts can roll progress back—back up locally before multi-PC swaps.

Gamepad aim feels wrong—is it me?

Test keyboard first, recalibrate dead zones, verify bindings after updates. Rail aim is sensitive by design.
