Starbreed Ally Abilities Guide
Actives, passives, and EX upgrades
Ability model
Every Starbreed ally contributes two layers:
- Passive — always-on modifier while they are in the party
- Active — triggered with party ability inputs (Q / E on default keyboard)
Mastering both is how rail stages stop feeling like a solo bullet hell. This page teaches evaluation language so you can compare kits across Roster names without needing a spoiler-heavy ability dump for every patch.
Reading a passive
Ask:
- Does it help me live (defense, sustain, Resolve synergy)?
- Does it help me kill (damage amp, shred, drone synergy)?
- Does it help me loot or farm (Credits efficiency, chip route comfort)?
- Does it help Affinity routing by making a favorite ally “worth” a slot?
Passives upgrade further through Impregnation Trials at 100 Affinity—those EX versions can move someone from situational to staple on Allies Tier List.
Reading an active
Actives are timed tools. Good times to press Q / E:
- Boss vulnerability windows (Boss Guides)
- Swarm panic moments before boost is empty (Controls)
- Reflective or armor phases that punish raw primary fire
- Chip-hunt cleanup when you need visual clarity (Data Chips)
Bad times: the second a phase starts if you will need the active twenty seconds later; or double-tapping out of boredom.
Role tags (practical)
| Role tag | What you want |
|---|---|
| Peel | Active saves you from lethal patterns |
| Delete | Active melts elites or adds |
| Battery | Passive feeds damage uptime |
| Anchor | Passive reduces mistake punishment |
| Specialty | Weird utility (clones, fields, unique interactions) |
Build shells with Party Comps and the Party Planner. Mix one Affinity target with two role pillars when bonding.
Examples without full spoilers
Development notes mention Tanya and Nika receiving upgraded active functions, Rooster-like beam/clone identities referenced in boss design, and Pom’s chip-centric reward path. Use patch history on Patch Notes when text changes.
Synergy with Aether
Assertion pilots want actives that capitalize on aggressive positioning. Resolve pilots want peel actives that buy HP back through safety. Align with Aether Guide.

Cooldown manners
Call your actives like a multiplayer player even though Starbreed is solo. If Slot 1 peeled thirty seconds ago, Slot 2 should be ready before you greed a chip branch. Staggering Q and E prevents the all-too-common “both skills down when Nova enrages” death.
After EX upgrades, re-learn the timing. A passive that suddenly shreds armor may mean you should spend actives earlier to create windows rather than holding them as panic buttons.
Tooltip discipline
Patch days are tooltip days. Skim every onboard ally after Patch Notes before you trust last week’s muscle memory. Then update role tags in your planner so Party Comps advice still matches reality.
Extra note for abilities
Re-check sibling links in this category before your next launch, and confirm Credits or Affinity goals still match your save after the latest shop visit.
Practice range ideas
Enter a low-threat stage and forbid yourself from firing the primary for twenty seconds—only party actives and movement. You will learn whether your peel actually peels and whether your delete actually deletes. Then reverse the drill: primary only, no actives, to feel how much the kit was carrying you.
Log results beside Roster names. If an active only shines on one boss gimmick, tag it Specialty rather than forcing it into every learning shell from Party Comps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common Starbreed questions.
How do I activate ally skills?
Use party ability keys—Q and E on the default keyboard layout—or the gamepad equivalents.
Do passives stack from bench allies?
Bring the ally in your active party. Bench fantasies do not grant combat passives.
What is an EX passive?
An upgraded passive unlocked via Impregnation Trials after 100 Affinity.
Should I save actives for bosses?
Save at least one for phase changes, but spending to prevent a death is correct.
Where are ability numbers?
In-game tooltips are authoritative; this page teaches evaluation and timing.
Do weapons replace ally kits?
No. Weapons and allies multiply each other—see the Credits and Weapons guides.
